Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

AKS (Aktivitätsschule) for grades 1–4 and SAKS (Sekundarstufen AKS) for grades 5–8 provide the after‑school program with homework supervision, projects, holiday care, excursions, and other activities. The program functions as an educational unit and emphasizes social skills, creativity, curiosity, and the transmission of knowledge, with more than 75 percent of staff holding formal pedagogical training. AKS offers before‑ and after‑school supervision and homework help for grades 1–4, while SAKS focuses on independence and personal responsibility after class, providing a space for exchange and activities for grades 5–8. The teams work closely with the school and families to support student development.

Arts and Creative

The school orchestra is a central part of the arts program; since 2012 students, parents, alumni and external players have performed together, and since 2017 the orchestra has been a member of UNOF, linking to the wider Norwegian music life. The elementary choir meets weekly and performs a repertoire of German and Norwegian songs at school events. Film work is integrated into the arts curriculum, and Oslo filmt! serves as a local festival for works from across the school. The school collaborates with Oslo museums and participates in Den kulturelle skolesekken (DKS), bringing professional art into the school.

Cultural and Language

Language and culture are woven into school life; language, culture, children, families and staff come from Germany and Norway, creating strong links to both Norwegian and German cultures. The school maintains an international atmosphere and engages with the broader German‑Norwegian cultural sphere through music, events and exchanges. Students participate in the German cultural competition Jugend musiziert, with Oslo regional events and opportunities to connect with the Auslandsschul network. Oslo‑based cultural experiences come through partnerships with museums and the Den kulturelle skolesekken program.

Social and Hobbies

The culture program provides social and hobby activities beyond the classroom, including the school orchestra and choir and a film program that culminates in events and festivals. The library supports reading with class‑based loan days and ‘Lesescouts' who assist with reading aloud and book recommendations. The Geitmyra school garden offers outdoor activities, including planting, harvesting and garden‑based events that foster community across ages and cultures.

Community and Service

A garden team of parents maintains the Geitmyra parcel, and volunteers are welcome to help with gardening tasks. The AKS and SAKS host a Parents' Day on May 2 to allow families to tour the facilities and learn about the after‑school program. Community involvement is a core part of the DENOSO experience, with parents and families playing an active role in school life.

Leadership and Professional

Marc Rohner is the Head of AKS/SAKS, leading the after‑school program since February 2017. The AKS/SAKS teams consist of staff from diverse professional backgrounds, with more than 75 percent holding pedagogical qualifications, and they work closely with school colleagues to support students. The Ganztagsbetreuung pages describe the program structure and pedagogy, with dedicated leadership for AKS and SAKS and a team that collaborates across languages and cultures.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The after‑school program emphasizes social competencies, creativity, curiosity and knowledge as part of a holistic approach to student development. It provides before‑ and after‑school support, homework help, and project work to foster well‑being and personal growth. The Geitmyra garden and outdoor activities offer opportunities for physical activity, nature engagement and community events, including birthdays and summer celebrations at the garden.
