Indian School Muscat (ISM) was established in 1975 with 135 students. The land in Darsait was granted by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, enabling the school to be established there. ISM has since grown to become the Gulf's largest co-educational school, now educating well over 9,200 students. It serves as the flagship school and provides academic and administrative support to other allied Indian Schools in Oman. Governance is via the School Management Committee (SMC), which includes a President, Vice President, Convener, Treasurer, and chairs of subcommittees for Academic, Co-curricular, Staff Welfare, Finance, Infrastructure, and Digital Systems.
ISM's student body comprises a large, diverse Indian expatriate community, with more than 9,200 students enrolled. The school hosts a rich calendar of cultural and inter-school events, including Jhankaar Spectrum (an inter-school cultural festival) and Radiant Rhythms (an inter-school rock festival), along with annual Day celebrations and in-school productions such as Curtain Tales. In its 50th anniversary year ISM expanded activities to include talks, community service initiatives, alumni events, and wide-ranging cultural programs. Alumni networks and community engagement are active components of ISM's culture.
ISM uses a School Management Committee (SMC) as the governance body that coordinates parent participation in educational decision-making. The SMC includes a President, Vice President, Convener, Treasurer, Co-convener, and chairs for subcommittees such as Academic, Co-curricular, Staff Welfare, Finance, Infrastructure, and Digital Systems, with official contact emails for each role. The presence of parent participation is acknowledged within the Indian Schools Oman framework, which emphasizes parent involvement in school management committees. The SMC maintains channels for input via its official emails and is listed in the school's mandatory public disclosures. The SMC's structure and contact details are publicly visible, illustrating formal parent and community engagement in school governance.
