Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Indian School Sohar was founded in 1982 by an association of members of the Indian business community to meet the educational needs of Indian expatriates in the region. It is an English‑medium, co‑educational KG–XII institution approved by the Oman Ministry of Education and affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). CBSE affiliation for Class X was granted on 1 April 1994, followed by Class XII in 2001, and the school offers Science and Commerce streams in Classes XI and XII. The school is intended primarily for students of Indian nationality and Indian origin, and its governance is based on the association of Indian business community that manages the school through a dedicated committee.

Community

ISS maintains an active school community with a calendar of cultural and sporting events involving students, families, and staff. Notable events include the 30th Annual Sports Day held on 11 December 2025 at the Sohar Sports Stadium, and celebrations such as World Hindi Day (12 January 2026) and Oman Environment Day (14 January 2026). The school has also hosted external engagements, including a visit from India's Ambassador to Oman in August 2025, underscoring its engagement with broader cultural and diplomatic communities. Additional on‑campus activities such as clay modelling competitions and STEAM initiatives further enrich the school's community life.

Parent-Teacher Association

A formal Parent-Teacher Association is not publicly described, but parent involvement is structured through regular Parent‑Teacher Meetings (PTMs) for multiple grade bands. A PTM for IX–XII was scheduled for 3 June 2025 (ISS/WEBCIR/021/25-26) and a Nursery–II PTM took place on 8 October 2025 (ISS/WEBCIR/048/25-26). Parents receive communications via circulars and notices posted on the site, including admissions information, book lists, and exam schedules, and a dedicated parent app provides updates, circulars, and fee payment options. Public materials also show parent participation in school activities such as Show-and-Tell competitions and inter‑house events, and ISS collaborates with CBSE Gulf Sahodaya conferences and ambassador visits to involve families in school life.
