Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Philippine School Oman was conceived in 1989 by Filipino overseas workers with the support of the Philippine Honorary Consul General Essa bin Mohammed Al Zedjali, in cooperation with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). It opened on February 2, 1990 at Al Wattayah as the Philippine Community School (PCS), enrolling 38 students under volunteer teachers, with Elenita Fernandez as the first principal. The school relocated several times in its early years and gained Government Recognition No. 02, s. 1995, renaming to Philippine School (PS) and aligning with Oman's education policies. A permanent Al Khuwair campus was inaugurated on June 16, 2007 by the Philippine Ambassador to Oman, marking a major milestone in its development. The institution later expanded to implement the K-12 curriculum starting in 2012 and joined the Association of Philippine Schools Overseas, receiving perpetual recognition in 2019; in 2024 it was awarded 11,000 square meters of land at Al-Mabela (Seeb/Barka) for a new campus to support continued growth.

Community

PSO serves the Filipino community in Oman and enrolls students from several nationalities. Community events center on cultural celebrations and school milestones, often featuring performances, parades, and exhibitions that showcase Filipino heritage as well as local culture. The 35th Founding Anniversary in 2025 highlighted a Parade of Nations and a variety of performances by students, with guests including the Philippine Ambassador to Oman and former BOT/PTA leaders. The school also documents events through its events page, reflecting ongoing community engagement.

Parent-Teacher Association

PSO's Parent-Teacher Association is the formal body that coordinates parent involvement, fundraising, and volunteer support for school activities. It collaborates with the Board of Trustees and school leadership to organize events, provide resources, and support student programs. For the 35th Founding Anniversary, PTA leadership under Mrs. Joanne Asma Tubo worked with the BOT led by Ms. Cherry Ann Cuntapay Ballad and the school administration to plan the celebration, including sponsorship outreach and volunteer coordination. Former PTA chairs have included Ms. Carmelita de Jesus, Ms. Maria Carolina Layog, and Mrs. Ma. Eloisa San Jose, reflecting long-standing parent leadership within PSO. The PTA also helps mobilize parent volunteers for events like cultural performances and student activities.
