The Sri Lankan School Muscat was founded in June 1988 by a group of Sri Lankan professionals in the Sultanate of Oman to provide a Sri Lankan community school. The doors opened on February 15, 1989, with 37 students and three staff under the leadership of Principal Lionel Jayasinghe. It initially moved to a camp structure in Wadi Kabir as the community grew. Over time it evolved into a leading international school in Oman, serving around 1,200 students from more than twenty nationalities and aligning with the Edexcel curriculum (IGCSE). Governance is provided by a Board of Directors drawn from the Sri Lankan community, with roles including an Honorary Chairman, Honorary Secretary, and Honorary Treasurer.
The school serves a diverse community that includes students from over twenty nationalities, with a strong Sri Lankan cultural emphasis. Milestone events, such as the 33rd anniversary in February 2022, brought together Sri Lankan officials and the wider community, including the planting of a Sri Lankan fruit sapling on campus. Student leadership and co-curricular programs foster community involvement, with students participating in functions and events under teacher supervision. Public communications, newsletters, and calendars document ongoing engagement with families and the broader Oman-Sri Lanka community.
