Founded in 1958, the British Overseas School began as a non-profit institution for the children of expatriates. As its student body grew, it relocated to purpose-built facilities in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority, providing an ideal environment for learning. In 2000, admissions were broadened to include local families, creating a more diverse international community while maintaining the British ethos. By 2004, the school extended its provision to secondary education, becoming the only school in Karachi offering a British education from pre-school through I/GCSE, and the Secondary School moved to new facilities in 2005 to meet growing demand. The school operates as a not-for-profit with governance by the British Overseas School Association (BOSA) and holds accreditation as a British Schools Overseas (BSO) school, with the most recent inspection conducted in November 2022.
The BOS Community is small, with a family feel, and parent volunteers are essential to running many events. In 2018-19 more than 100 parents volunteered to help with activities. Primary students participate in events such as the Halloween Party, Games Night, Cupcake Decorating, Bake Sale, and Pakistan Day, which showcases local art forms like Truck Art and Block Printing. Older students engage with the PTA in initiatives such as the Community Mela and BOS Carnival, while adults enjoy Meet & Greet gatherings and the Teacher Appreciation Lunch.
The PTA is led by a team of committed volunteers who run a broad range of events and activities for every age group. In the Primary years, the PTA organises Halloween Party, Games Night, Cupcake Decorating, Bake Sale, and Pakistan Day celebrations. Older students partner with the PTA to organise charitable events such as the Community Mela and whole-school events like the BOS Carnival.
British Overseas School (BOS) in Karachi was founded in 1958 as a non-profit institution for the children of expatriates. It relocated to purpose-built facilities in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and, in 2000, began admitting local families while maintaining its British ethos. By 2004 BOS introduced secondary education, becoming the only school in Karachi offering a British curriculum from pre-school to IGCSE, with the secondary school moving to new facilities in 2005 to support growth. BOS is accredited as a British Schools Overseas (BSO) school and is an Edexcel member delivering IGCSEs. English is the medium of instruction, and BOS offers modern foreign languages: Urdu, French and Mandarin Chinese (French is compulsory in some stages and IGCSE options exist). The campus is in Phase 7 of DHA, at 7/8, 14 Lane, Khayaban-e-Hilal. The school describes itself as small with a family feel and operates a Duke of Edinburgh Award, international trips, and Round Square membership that broadens opportunities beyond the classroom.
