Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Established in 1976 by a Dakar-based association of parents as the Petite Ecole Française, the Lycée Jean Mermoz took its name from the famed aviator and quickly expanded. It was placed under AEFE management in 1990, joining the global network of French schools abroad. In 1995 the lycée moved to Avenue Cheikh Anta Diop (Route de Ouakam). A reconstruction program announced in 2005 delivered a campus capable of hosting 2,400 students (800 in primaire and 1,600 in secondaire); the first phase opened in 2010 and the second phase in 2011, completing the facilities. Today the lycée educates more than 2,500 students from CP to Terminale and remains an AEFE direct-managed school approved by the French Ministry of National Education.

Community

The Lycée Français Jean Mermoz participates in AEFE-wide initiatives and events that showcase French international education, including La Semaine des Lycées Français du Monde, the ADN-AEFE school exchange, Ambassadeurs, Ambassadrices en Herbe, and the Jeux Internationaux de la Jeunesse. Other network activities include La Bourse d'Excellence Major, L'Orchestre des Lycées Français du Monde, Le Mai des langues, and the Jeux de la Zone d'Afrique Occidentale, as well as Agora, a platform for students and alumni. The school emphasizes multilingualism, with French as a core language and opportunities to learn multiple languages; since 2023 it is labeled as an Etablissement en Démarche de Développement Durable (E3D) and supports language pathways like PARLE to strengthen English. The Section Internationale Américaine is offered from CP to Terminale, integrating American language, culture, and teaching methods within the French system, and students can pursue international language certifications such as Cambridge exams (KET, PET, FCE), DELE, and DELF.

Parent-Teacher Association

The LFJM community includes an active Parents d'élèves association, APE Teranga, and an independent parent group, LIPE. Elections for parent representatives are held annually, and elected parents sit on the school councils, including the Conseil d'école and the Conseil d'établissement. APE Teranga is affiliated with FAPEE, and LIPE operates as an autonomous list of parents. Contact details are provided for both associations (APE Teranga and LIPE) to engage with school governance and projects.
