Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Happiness and wellbeing are woven into the very fabric of Middleton’s culture and explicitly embedded in our Vision and Mission, with Mindfulness as one of our Core Values. As the flagship school in Southeast Asia for The Contentment Foundation, we bring its Four Pillars of Wellbeing—Mindfulness, Community, Self-Curiosity, and Contentment & Balance—into every aspect of school life, giving students the tools to manage emotions, build resilience, and grow with empathy. This whole-school approach nurtures balanced, confident learners, while our student-led Contentment Council drives wellbeing initiatives and champions Middleton’s unique ‘Gross School Happiness.’

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Middleton International School supports students with mild to moderate Special Educational Needs (SEN) through differentiated instruction and personalized support plans. The school employs qualified learning support specialists who collaborate closely with classroom teachers to accommodate diverse learning profiles, including needs related to learning difficulties, attention issues, and mild developmental delays. Middleton is not a specialist SEN school, so prospective parents are encouraged to discuss their child's specific needs with the admissions team to ensure the school can provide appropriate support.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Middleton International School provides a comprehensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme to support non-native English speakers in developing language proficiency. Students may undergo an assessment upon admission or during their first weeks to determine the level of support required. The programme consists of two tiers: Standard EAL, comprising four weekly sessions (30 minutes for Early Years, 45 minutes for Primary and Secondary), and Intensive EAL (IEAL), which doubles the session time for enhanced support. Additionally, students in Grades 4 to 7 who do not yet meet mainstream requirements may enrol in the Middleton Intensive English Programme, designed to accelerate proficiency before transitioning to mainstream classes with EAL support.

Mental Wellbeing

At Middleton International School places a strong emphasis on supporting students’ mental wellbeing as they adjust to new environments and academic demands. The homeroom teachers work closely with parents to provide consistent emotional support, ensuring that students feel safe, cared for, and understood. By fostering a culture of trust, care, and friendliness, we encourage regular attendance, active participation, and a strong sense of belonging—helping every learner to thrive both emotionally and academically.

Safeguarding

Middleton International School is committed to safeguarding and child protection, adhering to current legislation, including the Children and Young Persons Act. The school's policy outlines responsibilities to ensure the welfare of children, recognizing categories of abuse such as physical, neglect, sexual, and emotional abuse. The policy emphasizes that all members of the school community have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
