St Gerard's Preschool provides a holistic program that combines academic foundations with physical, social, emotional and bilingual development. From age two, toddlers participate in songs, rhymes and stories in English and their mother tongue, and Nursery through Kindergarten are immersed in a bilingual learning environment with hands-on activities that support key skill development. The curriculum is built through teacher observation and assessment, and aims to challenge each child within a meaningful, hands-on learning environment. Language Arts, Mathematics and Knowledge and Understanding of the World are integrated across the curriculum, with Zoo-phonics used to develop reading and spelling and regular science inquiry and field experiences to connect concepts to real-world contexts.
Creative development is encouraged through a range of art and craft activities, music and movement, cookery, and dramatic play. Children explore a variety of materials and ideas, with an emphasis on the process of exploration rather than the finished product. Work is displayed in the classroom to celebrate learning and creativity.
English is used across the curriculum and Mandarin is offered as a mother tongue. Children begin recognizing Mandarin characters from Nursery and progress to strokes in Kindergarten 1, with Hanyu Pinyin introduced in Kindergarten 2 as part of Primary 1 preparation. From early years, the school emphasizes a bilingual learning environment with English and the mother tongue.
Social interaction is central to the program. The toddler and early years focus on activities that promote social interaction and peer learning, including art, blocks, dramatic play, manipulatives, language, books and sensory experiences. Four-year-olds develop cooperative play and social skills through planned and spontaneous group experiences, with opportunities for large and small group activities. There is daily outdoor play time as part of physical development.
Parents are actively involved through a family–school partnership, with open communication and shared decision making. Parents may observe classrooms, attend parent–teacher conferences, and participate in seminars and family events; committees of parent volunteers work on school projects and staff welcome ideas and involvement.
The school is set in lush greenery with a well-organized environment to support positive interactions and meet individual and group needs. Classrooms feature clearly defined activity centres, low furniture, accessible materials and private spaces, with direct access to a playground, water and toilet facilities. There is daily outdoor movement and a structured programme that supports physical development and well-being.
