Founded in 1912, The Japanese School Singapore began as a Japanese school for expatriates and was initially located on Middle Road. After World War II, the school was re-established and in September 1966 opened a primary program at Dalvey Estate with 27 students and 3 teachers. The institution moved to Swiss Cottage Estate in 1968, where the secondary program began, before relocating to West Coast Road in 1971 to accommodate growth. In 1976 the Clementi Road campus opened to house the growing primary program, and a West Coast building followed in 1984 as enrollment expanded. In 1998 the Clementi and Changi primary campuses were separated into two independent schools, with Clementi serving as the headquarters; the three-campus structure has continued to support primary in Clementi and Changi and the secondary program on West Coast.
The Clementi Campus fosters a diverse, close-knit community that engages with local institutions and participates in exchanges and cultural activities. Annual events include an entrance ceremony, a welcome gathering for new students, the Clementi Kids Concert, sports day, and a year-end graduation, with additional trips and performances enriching the year. The school also runs exchange activities with institutions such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), where students participate in taiko drumming and language activities with university students. These activities reflect the school's emphasis on multicultural understanding through interactions with Singapore's diverse society.
The Clementi Campus PTA coordinates a broad program that connects families with classroom learning and school events. It manages practical tasks like arranging lunch orders for students and communicating school news to parents. It runs events such as the Toy Festival, the Clementi Kids Concert, and various summer projects, as well as outside-the-classroom learning experiences like field trips to the Singapore Zoo, Dragon Boat activities, and visits to the Science Centre. The PTA also organizes exhibitions and competitions (e.g., bibliobattle) and keeps families informed about facility usage and enrollment-related notices to foster active parent involvement. These activities demonstrate the PTA's role in strengthening collaboration between families and staff and in supporting student learning outside the classroom.
