Gateway College was established in 1997 in a converted house with 33 students and eight staff. In January 2005, Gateway International School became Gateway College, signaling a new era in Sri Lanka's international school system. In 2013, the motto changed from "Gateway to Knowledge" to "Gateway to Learning" to reflect a focus on lifelong learning. The school provides learning of global standards while retaining the culture of Sri Lanka and is an international school in a Sri Lankan environment. Students engage in daily religious observances and a variety of religious, charitable and social service activities throughout the year, and in 2020 moved to a hybrid model of teaching and learning.

Gateway fosters a sense of belonging and love for the Motherland and respect for customs, norms and values. The student-teacher relationship is friendly and the management style is firm, friendly and fair. All Gateway students are exhorted to pay obeisance to their parents daily according to the customs of the community they belong to.
Gateway College Kandy provides an international education in Sri Lanka for ages 2 to 18. The school follows Cambridge curricula at Primary and Secondary levels, offering Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSEs and BTEC qualifications. The Curriculum Prism integrates academics, sport, co-curricular activities and character development, modelling the English National Curriculum while incorporating local history, culture and civil society to ground students in Sri Lanka and broaden global perspectives. The campus offers Foundation to Graduation pathway from Play Group to Degree Level, with facilities such as a reading corner, music room, multipurpose room with a mini library, IT suite and outdoor play area. Primary and Secondary campuses feature libraries, science and design technology labs, art and drama spaces, a Math Lab, an Innovation Studio, an auditorium and ICT suites, plus BYOD at A Level and School-On-Line. Since 2020, the school has operated a hybrid teaching model, reinforcing flexibility and continuity globally.
