Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Mindfulness is a wellbeing program implemented in the Secondary school for the last 3 years, with 5 minutes of mindfulness practice in the morning. Primary students from Year 3 onwards participate in 3 minutes of mindfulness after the interval. Mindfulness activities include mindful listening, mindful breathing, mindful seeing, mindful body scanning and mindful gratitude. The MindUp curriculum is introduced from 2022 onwards during HomeRoom sessions. MindUp is an evidence-based social and emotional learning program grounded in neuroscience, with four pillars: Neuroscience, Positive Psychology, Mindful Awareness and SEL. The practice of mindfulness in the morning and after the interval supports emotion regulation, better behaviour, greater empathy, better social skills and reduced test anxiety.

Mental Wellbeing

Mindfulness and related wellbeing activities support pupils' mental wellbeing, with ongoing mindfulness practices and the MindUp program reinforcing social-emotional learning to build resilience and emotional regulation.

Safeguarding

Gateway College focuses on safeguarding the ethos to provide a calm, disciplined, respectful, caring and ethical environment for children. Every student engages in religious observances and mindfulness daily, and the school fosters respect for diverse beliefs by including learning about other religions.
