Founded in 1962, the Lycée Français Pierre Loti (LFPL) began with a Management Committee made up of parents, teachers and representatives of the French Embassy in Turkey and was then named École française d'Istanbul (EFI). In 1989, following a students' vote, it was renamed in tribute to Pierre Loti, the French writer who championed Franco-Turkish friendship and visited Istanbul seven times between 1876 and 1913. Between 1942 and 1962 the school carried several names — Baccalaureate Preparation Courses, Lycée du Centre d'études françaises, and the French Consular School of Istanbul — and primary classes were housed in the Saint-Louis Seminary, sometimes referred to as the Embassy's Little School. In 1985 the first agreement between LFPL and the French State was signed; from 1990, agreements with the French government have been channelled through AEFE, the Agency for French Education Abroad. The Papillon nickname, dating from the school's early years, remains a touchstone of the community. The school's premises have shifted over time, and today preschool and primary classes are located in Beyoğlu while middle and high school are in Tarabya, reflecting the school's evolving identity within Istanbul's landscape.

LFPL in Istanbul is a private international school delivering the French national curriculum through the AEFE network.
