Carlisle School was founded in 1968 by business leaders, educators, and professionals in the Martinsville, Virginia area to provide a community-based school that combined academics with high personal standards. The school opened with 81 students in grades 1–7. Today Carlisle School serves more than 340 students in Pre-K through grade 12 from southwestern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. It was accredited in 1974 and is a member of the Southern Association of Independent Schools. During a VAIS and SAIS accreditation visit in October 2014, Carlisle was again fully accredited.
Carlisle School celebrates the different heritage backgrounds of its students and encourages international students to apply for admission. International students experience a program with a range of extracurricular activities in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Carlisle has more than 12 years of experience hosting international students. The school reports a 6:1 student/teacher ratio.
