Keio Academy of New York was established in 1990 by Keio Gijuku to meet the needs of Japanese families living overseas. It inherits the traditions of Fukuzawa Yukichi and provides a bilingual and bicultural curriculum to prepare students to become global leaders of the 21st century. Keio Academy is registered by the New York State Board of Regents and first accredited by NYSAIS in 2001, with renewals in 2011 and 2023. Its mission promotes tri-cultural education by combining the best of Japanese, American and Keio cultures to produce graduates with moral-independence and self-reliance. Milestones include a preliminary office in 1987; first class admitted in 1990; MEXT authorization in 1991; and NYSAIS accreditation renewals in 2011 and 2023.
Keio Academy runs as a full seven-day-a-week boarding school, with a small number of day students (commuters). Instrumental music lessons are arranged throughout the week, underpinning a program of concerts; the Saturday Morning Program for Juniors includes classes in art, singing and music appreciation, while Seniors participate in debating and public speaking; inter-house competitions run most days of the week, with varsity sports including volleyball, basketball, futsal/soccer, kickball, tennis, kendo, karate, dance, kickboxing, weight training, yoga, walking/running, badminton and lacrosse. Outings to New York City galleries and theaters are a frequent feature on Sunday afternoons; a wide variety of clubs and societies, including Japanese culture, chess and a student newspaper, run on Wednesday afternoons.
