Academics

The French American Academy – Englewood Campus teaches American Curriculum, French Curriculum for students aged 2 to 12.

Curriculum

The Englewood campus offers bilingual education by following both the American curriculum (accredited by the Middle States Association) and the French curriculum (accredited by the French National Ministry of Education). Preschool through Elementary School students develop as bilingual communicators and culturally aware global citizens. No prior knowledge of French is required to enter Preschool; knowledge of French is required to enter any class from First Grade onward. The elementary program emphasizes essential subject knowledge and lifelong interdisciplinary skills based on the 6 Cs: Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.
Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The FAA integrates social-emotional learning across all grade levels using three core approaches: a responsive classroom framework, growth mindset development, and non-violent communication. The responsive classroom framework creates a nurturing, inclusive, and safe learning environment and includes practices such as Morning Meetings, interactive modelling, guided discovery, and energizers. Growth mindset development helps students believe that intelligence and talents can be developed with effort, perseverance, and practice. Non-violent communication teaches students to identify their own and others' unmet needs and to express feelings to reduce conflict and strengthen relationships. Together, these methods cultivate emotional regulation, empathy, collaboration, and responsible decision-making, supporting students' academic and social growth.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

FAA provides in-house supports for diverse learners through an Intervention Team consisting of a speech pathologist and a licensed social worker who collaborate with teachers to support academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. The team meets monthly with the Head of School and division directors to review students and tailor strategies, based on referrals from teachers. Differentiation and targeted in-class interventions are the first line of support; when progress stalls, the school develops a Personalized Plan for Rewarding Education (PPRE) with accommodations and measurable goals, updated each trimester. If needs persist, the plan can be advanced to a Plan for Personalized Actions (PAP) or a Projet Personnalisé de Scolarisation (PPS)-style plan to ensure longer-term supports. The FAA also provides English as an Additional Language (EAL), French as an Additional Language (FAL), Academic Support, and Counseling, delivered through a combination of push-in and pull-out services.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes are small-group pull-out sessions designed to teach English to non-native speakers at a pace and level appropriate to each student's abilities.

Mental Wellbeing

FAA supports student health and well-being through the EVAR/EVARS framework, a developmentally appropriate approach to emotional and relational learning that expands from EVAR for younger students to EVARS for older students. The framework centers on cognitive, emotional, and social competencies, including knowing yourself and your body, building relationships, and finding your place in society. Core topics cover consent, online safety, digital citizenship, equality, health and well-being, and strategies for emotional regulation and stress management. Health and well-being are considered integral to academic success, with ongoing attention to reducing harassment and promoting safe, respectful environments, and families are invited to participate as partners in the process.

Safeguarding

The EVAR/EVARS framework includes safeguarding elements such as personal safety, boundaries, consent, online safety, and healthy relationships, all taught in age-appropriate ways and reinforced across grade levels. The school emphasizes protective education and a safe, supportive climate, and partners with families to share language, objectives, and practices. The FAA's Intervention Team supports safeguarding by identifying and addressing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional concerns through referral processes, monthly reviews, and targeted plans (PPRE, PAP, PPS). Counseling services and EAL/FAL and academic supports are provided to address safeguarding-related needs as part of a holistic approach to student well-being.

The Admissions Director acknowledges receipt of the online application and arranges a private interview with both parents and the child. During the interview, the Admissions Director and/or School Director discuss whether the school's values, objectives, and academic expectations are a good match, with the option for the child to stay with the parents, join a class, or meet the pedagogical coordinator. Step 2 – Admissions Interview. The interview is conducted with both parents and the child and provides an opportunity to ask questions and assess fit. Step 3 – Notification of decision. The Admissions Director notifies the decision by email, with rolling admissions thereafter depending on availability. A few things to know before applying: children entering the Englewood preschool must be 2.5 by the first day of school (Pre-K2), while Pre-K3 requires 3 years old by December 31; knowledge of French is not required to enter Preschool, but French becomes mandatory from First grade upward; the school's cut-off date is December 31; the minimum age for PK-2 is 2.5 by the first day of school; a test may be required for non-French entrants to determine language level.
