The Woodlands Preparatory School opened its facility in 2002 and was founded as a college-preparatory day school. The first senior class graduated in May 2008, and graduates have consistently earned admission to their top-choice colleges. In 2013 the school came under new ownership, and the leadership introduced the International Baccalaureate. In 2015, with the IB Primary Years Program and Diploma Program already in place, the school obtained the IB Middle Years Program and Diploma Program, becoming the only IB Continuum School in the Houston area and one of four in Texas. In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic caused a drop in face-to-face enrollment, leading to asynchronous delivery and the development of The Woodlands Prep High School Online, which provides a U.S.-based high school diploma certified by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
The Woodlands Prep maintains an active community on its site with regular posts about student achievements and program updates, including the High Performance Sports Program. Posts celebrate student-athletes who reach national teams, showing that education and sports are pursued together. The Dual Program with Universidad La Salle México launched January 13, 2026, expanding international education opportunities for students. The school emphasizes balancing academics, athletics, and international experiences to develop students as global citizens.
