Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The High School began operations in 1991 with three Form 1 classes on the Gateway Primary School premises. The founder headmaster, Paul Revell, and his secretary Jenny Chibota occupied what was then a gardener's shed for their office, and assemblies were held in a tent or outdoors. After two terms, the school moved to the High School premises and, by 1992, enrolment expanded to include Form 3 and Form 4. Leadership progressed from Mr Chibisa (headmaster, 1996) to Mr Muzamhindo (2008), Tim Middleton (2010), and currently Tunga Mashungu (2015). The school introduced the Career Preparation Programme (1996), the ACE programme (2002), and the Takuranashe Class (2010), and established a counselling service (1996) with a Career Fair launched in 2012.

Community

Speech Days were held at Living Word Tabernacle and plays were performed in the main quad, with Shona drama works such as Ndikandei and Mogoba reShumba winning regional and national awards. Sport has been central to life at Gateway, with cricket and rugby fields, tennis courts, and a swimming pool opened in 2011 after years of developing the grounds. The Gateway Co-Ed Hockey Festival began in 2007 and now features 24 teams from 12 schools. Gateway has also facilitated international tours and exchanges, including trips to the UK and to India, and visits to France and the Holy Land.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parent Representative Council (PRC) facilitates communication between the parent body and school management, including the Board of Governors. It undertakes projects to improve facilities or promote welfare, raises funds and manages donations, and assists in extramural and special school functions. The PRC is a support group for the school and is not a body to debate school issues or policies. In 2008 the Board of Governors introduced the Parent Trust Partnership (PTP) to strengthen the relationship between the PRC and the Board. The PRC AGM reports on activities, with a Chairman's Report and a Treasurer's Report and elections for committee members.
