Singapore curriculum

By · B2C Marketing Manager

The Singapore national curriculum is run by Singapore's Ministry of Education and is known for academic rigour, especially in mathematics and the sciences. Internationally, a handful of schools (Singapore-affiliated or bilingual schools in Asia) follow it from primary through to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O- and A-Level exams.

Primary 1–6

Primary

Six years, ending with the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). Deep foundations in maths (Singapore Maths), English, mother tongue and science.

Secondary 1–4/5

Secondary

Streamed into Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical). Ends with GCE O-Level exams at 16, jointly certified with Cambridge Assessment.

JC 1–2

Junior College (A-Levels)

Two years of intensive pre-university study leading to Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Levels — the direct entry route to Singaporean universities.

Singapore

Singapore Maths and mastery

Singapore Maths — the model method, concrete-pictorial-abstract progression, bar modelling — is a hallmark. Even schools that don't follow the full Singapore curriculum often adopt its maths approach.

Is Singapore right for your child?

It tends to suit families who…

  • Are relocating to Singapore
  • Want strong maths and science preparation
  • Value a structured, mastery-focused approach
  • Are aiming for top Singaporean universities

It may be less ideal if…

  • Your child prefers a broad, inquiry-led education
  • The high-stakes exam culture is a concern
  • You want an internationally uniform framework like IB

Common questions

FAQs about the Singapore curriculum

How is the Singapore curriculum different from the British curriculum? +
They share the GCE O- and A-Level exam structures (Singapore co-developed them with Cambridge), but the Singapore Mathematics syllabus is notably more demanding and the streaming model is different.
Will my child be far behind if they're not Singapore-born? +
Primary entry from another curriculum is usually manageable. Secondary entry into Express stream from outside the system can be tough — most international schools assess for placement and offer bridging support.
