About international schools in Italy
Japanese-curriculum schools in Italy fall into two clear groups: full-time nihonjin gakkō that follow Japan’s national curriculum (notably in cities such as Milan and Rome) and part-time “hoshū” (Japanese supplementary) schools that run on weekends to maintain Japanese language and subjects for return to Japan. Instruction is primarily in Japanese, with English classes commonly taught and local-language (Italian) lessons varying by school and staffing. Fees and funding vary widely - many smaller community schools are run by parent committees or supported by Japanese companies and, in some cases, receive government support, so published tuition levels are not always comparable with larger international schools. Admissions commonly follow the Japanese system (the school year and assessment rhythm used in Japan), hoshū programmes usually enrol on a term-by-term or annual basis, and families relocating to Italy should contact schools early because places, transport arrangements and language support differ between sites.
