Churchie's rich history and longstanding traditions date back to 1912 when William Perry French Morris founded the school at Toowong, before relocating to the present site in East Brisbane in 1918. In early 1913 the school's name was changed to The Cathedral School following a move to new premises at St John's Cathedral in the city where 33 boys finished the year. Numbers grew and in 1916, with an enrolment of 106 students, the name changed to Church of England Grammar School, and land was purchased to build the new school; the foundation stone was laid in 1917 on the site where Churchie stands today. The Churchie Archive records the school's beginnings in 1912 as St Magnus Hall Collegiate School for Boys, with just three students, and traces the evolution to Anglican Church Grammar School.
Churchie's community is built around active parental involvement through the Churchie Parents Advisory Association (CPAA), which provides representation across the Prep and Senior Schools, the boarding community and the support groups; the CPAA executive committee is comprised of nominated representatives from parents across the School. Parent Connect is the school-wide parent community support group focused on nurturing the fun and family-centric side of school life. Parent Connect manages volunteer groups and services such as the Viking Café and Prep School tuckshop, Community Cookers, Uniform Shop, Meals on Wheels, Chapel Flowers and the Community Chorale, and there are multiple support groups that foster parent participation, build team spirit and drive fundraising and events.
