The first Geelong Grammar School opened on 1 October 1855, as a private venture to provide secondary education to the sons of Geelong's middle class, under the auspices of the Church of England. Five clergymen, including the first headmaster George Vance, were founders and early supporters. In 1858 the school moved into grand neo-Gothic buildings in central Geelong, survived a closure in 1860, and reopened in 1863 under headmaster J Bracebridge Wilson. By its golden jubilee in 1907 the school educated boys from across Australia and was regarded as Australia's Eton, even adopting the same shade of blue for its school colour. The Hermitage and Clyde Houses honor the two amalgamated schools; Garnett House is named after Tommy Garnett, the principal who introduced co-education; Elisabeth Murdoch House was founded in 2009 and honors Elisabeth Murdoch, a Clyde student.
