Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

Co-curricular activities span sport, performing and creative arts, debating, service and outdoor education. These programs complement the curriculum and provide opportunities for students to identify and develop their individual strengths. The skills gained through co-curricular learning include compassion, courage and collaboration. Co-curricular programs are at the core of learning and should not be viewed as extras.

Arts and Creative

The Arts Program is available in both curricular and co-curricular capacity. Theatre and Drama foster creativity, rigour and community, with productions such as whole-campus musicals and campus-based plays. Music features Performance Ensembles, Orchestra, String Orchestra, Wind Band, Choir, Jazz and Chamber ensembles with frequent concerts. Visual Arts encompasses Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Digital Media and Design, with annual exhibitions.

Cultural and Language

International trips support Global Citizenship with around 10–12 trips each year, including service traditions and cultural experiences. Reciprocal Regional Cultural Visits for Year 8 and Year 10 place students in homestay or boarding arrangements to immerse them in diverse living situations in Australia or overseas. Students host international or interstate visitors as reciprocal hosts, broadening cross-cultural understanding.

Social and Hobbies

Reasoning, research and public speaking skills are developed through Debating, which is academically rigorous and competitive within the region. Debating programs include Middle Years Debating (Years 7–8), University Campus Debating (Year 9) and Senior Debating (Years 10–12) with staff and alumni coaches and regional competitions. Cadets provide a major leadership opportunity; the Army Cadet Unit is the largest in Victoria, with training that builds leadership, communication and teamwork across years.

Community and Service

Local service is driven by the IDEALS Committee, with partnerships including OrphFund, 300 Blankets, Brotherhood of St Laurence and Big Group Hug. The Round Square network connects students to international exchanges, conferences and service projects. The Cambodia Service Project and Northern Territory Service Project offer opportunities to serve communities locally and abroad, and the Ivanhoe Diploma recognises co-curricular contributions.

Leadership and Professional

Cadets offer a major leadership opportunity, with the Army Cadet Unit described as the largest in Victoria. Senior students take leadership roles within cadet training, which complements the academic program. The IDEALS Program mirrors elements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, focusing on Adventurous Journey, Community Service, Developing Skills and Physical Recreation. Round Square provides international exchange experiences, conferences and service projects as part of a global leadership pathway.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Outdoor and Adventure immerses students in real-world experiences through camps, outdoor education, international trips and cultural tours. Adventure builds character, resilience and self-reliance, and fosters collaboration and environmental awareness. Outdoor Education is delivered by trained outdoor educators and fully supports the curriculum. Camps run from Year 4 through Senior years, including inter-school and regional experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom.

The curriculum combines the Australian Curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, offering a broad range of subjects from Early Learning to Year 12 across multiple campuses. In the Early Learning and Primary Years, literacy and numeracy are taught alongside specialist subjects such as Visual Arts, Music, Japanese, Physical Education and Library. In the Middle Years, core subjects are studied with elective options in Arts and Design, allowing students to begin exploring personal interests. In Year 9, the University Campus program brings real-world experiences through a university partnership. Senior Years students tailor their courses to future pathways. The One School approach links Buckley House, Ridgeway, Plenty and University Campus, enabling cross-campus projects and co-curricular participation, including Round Square exchanges, international trips and service initiatives that foster leadership and global citizenship.
