Ivanhoe Grammar School began as St James' Church of England Grammar School for Boys, founded in 1915 by Reverend Sydney Buckley, with fourteen boys in the inaugural intake. By 1920 the school relocated to its current site, was renamed Ivanhoe Grammar School, and adopted its crest and brown-and-white colours. During World War II the school relocated to Yea; after the war the Memorial Junior School opened in 1955 (Buckley House), and a new Ivanhoe Campus opened at Doreen in 1990 with Plenty Campus becoming co-educational in 1992. The school joined the Round Square network in 1997 and hosted the International Round Square Conference in 2005, with the centenary year celebrated in 2015. The University Campus opened in 2018 through a partnership with La Trobe University.
Ivanhoe Parents and Friends (IP&F) brings together under one umbrella a large number of volunteer groups that enhance opportunities and activities for students across the three campuses. Community Events include Buckley House Art Show, Primary Art Show – Out of This World, and the Graduate Art & Design Exhibition. An Acknowledgement of Country welcomes the Wurundjeri people, and the school maintains an Inclusion Strategy and a Reconciliation Action Plan to support an inclusive environment.
Ivanhoe Parents and Friends (IP&F) is the umbrella for 16 parent groups across the three campuses. The cross-campus South Ground Club coordinates parent and alumni involvement and supports current cricketers and school events. Friends of Plenty Campus coordinates Plenty Campus parent groups, year-level representatives and social/fundraising activities, and operates the Plenty Exchange, a second-hand uniform shop. Other activities include annual social and fundraising events such as the Spring Luncheon, and opportunities to volunteer, with many families joining in as little as one hour per term.
Ivanhoe Grammar School is a private, co-educational day school in Australia with four campuses and a single, connected learning community. The curriculum combines the Australian Curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, offering a broad range of subjects from Early Learning to Year 12 across multiple campuses. In the Early Learning and Primary Years, literacy and numeracy are taught alongside specialist subjects such as Visual Arts, Music, Japanese, Physical Education and Library. In the Middle Years, core subjects are studied with elective options in Arts and Design, allowing students to begin exploring personal interests. In Year 9, the University Campus program brings real-world experiences through a university partnership. Senior Years students tailor their courses to future pathways. The One School approach links Buckley House, Ridgeway, Plenty and University Campus, enabling cross-campus projects and co-curricular participation, including Round Square exchanges, international trips and service initiatives that foster leadership and global citizenship.
