Merici College was established in 1959 as Canberra Catholic Girls' High School. Archbishop Eris O'Brien recognised the need for a Catholic high school to cater for girls and the school was staffed by representatives from six different orders of nuns rather than being owned and run by one order. In 1965 a second Catholic girls school was established and the name was changed to Braddon Catholic Girls High School. Since 1983, the year of the Silver Jubilee, the College has been known as Merici College, in honour of St Angela Merici, founder of the Ursulines, one of the original orders of nuns at the College.
The governance structure is under the authority of the Archbishop and Archdiocesan directives. School Boards and School Community Councils provide opportunities for members of the school, Parish and Archdiocesan communities to support Catholic education in the school. The Merici College Community Council performs a dual role: governance of the College and the Parents & Friends Association of Merici. The governance arrangements are designed to assist the school in fulfilling its mission within the Catholic education framework.
The Merici College Community Council performs a dual role: governance of the College, as well as the Parents & Friends Association of Merici. The P&F Committee builds community by engaging and connecting parents, carers and friends of the College and supports the College's vision, mission and purpose. The P&F Committee is a sub-committee of the Merici College Community Council. The P&F Committee operates under a charter. The Council Chair can be contacted for matters.
