MLC School began in 1886 as Wesleyan Ladies College, Burwood, to prepare girls for university honours. In 1890 the first purpose-built Kindergarten was established and in the 1890s the School helped establish the Trinity College London Musical Theory Examinations in Australia. In 1906 the School held Australia's first athletics carnival for girls. The boarding program operated from 1886 to 1979; a fire in 1977 led to its closure, and in 1977 the School became officially known as MLC School following the Methodist Church's union into the Uniting Church in Australia. The House system began in 1942 with Mooramoora, Churunga, Leawarra and Booralee, and six more houses were added in 1992; the School's motto is Ut filiae lucis ambulate, 'Walk as daughters of the light'.
