Newington College was founded in 1863 by the Wesleyan Methodist Church. It opened at Newington House, Silverwater, on 16 July 1863 with 16 students aged seven to sixteen. The College was conceived as decidedly Wesleyan in character but open to the sons of parents of all religious denominations, and it served as the home for Methodist theological training in NSW until 1914. Construction for the Stanmore campus began in 1877 and the move to Stanmore occurred in 1880. The archives preserve the work and life of the College and community for more than 150 years.
Newington has cultivated partnerships among students, parents, teachers, Old Newingtonians and the community at local, national and international levels. The Community and Development Office provides comprehensive support for Old Newingtonians, MOONS (Mothers of Old Newingtonians), New Grandies (grandparents and family friends), past staff, benefactors and friends to stay connected with the College and attend activities and events. The Newington College Foundation was established in 1974 to foster giving within the school community and is the major fundraising arm supporting means-tested scholarships, innovative learning environments and strategic initiatives.
The Parents and Friends Association (P&F) is a voluntary organisation that offers parents and carers an inclusive community where thoughts, ideas and suggestions are welcomed and valued, and it provides a voice for parents to the College Executive. It provides opportunities for connection, community and communication, including Back to Newington Day, the Biennial K-12 Parent Soiree, a P&F Speaker Series, and year-group socials and coffee mornings. The P&F coordinates more than 80 parents across 10 co-curricular groups in activities such as AFL, basketball, cricket, football, rowing, rugby, tennis, volleyball, water polo and creative arts, and runs the Black and White merchandise and a second-hand clothing store. It funds facility improvements and initiatives, supports major sponsorships such as LitFest and the STEM Festival, and contributes to means-tested scholarships administered by the Newington Foundation. General Meetings are held each term with updates from College leadership, and Parent Ambassadors help keep families informed.
