Pembroke School was formed in 1974 through the merger of King's College and Girton Girls' School. It is governed by a School Board that provides strategic oversight. Pembroke has a long-standing boarding history, welcoming students from across Australia and the world. Pembroke introduced the IB Diploma Programme in 1989, making it South Australia's oldest IB World School.
Pembroke has an active community supported by a network of parent groups and volunteers. The Pembroke Parents' & Friends' Association is the major parent body within the School, driving activities and engagement and acting as a central liaison with all parent groups at Pembroke. The association meets twice per term and hosts social functions for parents, such as the Mother's Day Lunch and the Gala Ball, which bring the community together and support school needs. Various parent committees support drama, sport, music, netball, rowing, and scouting activities—including the Drama & Film Forum, Football Club, Friends of Pembroke Netball, Rowing Parents' Association, and Pembroke Friends of Music—organising events, fundraising, and on-campus activities. Old Scholar events and reunions (e.g., King's Luncheon and Girton Luncheon) demonstrate ongoing alumni engagement.
