French and Japanese are taught. All students in Years 7 and 8 study a language; those continuing from Junior School will have studied Japanese from Years 1 to 6 and can continue in Japanese or switch to French in Year 7. From Year 9 onwards, languages become elective subjects. Students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and gain intercultural understanding.
Biennial language tours to France and Japan provide real-world language experiences. In alternate years, Penrhos hosts Hakata High School students, building intercultural understanding. Exchange programs offer further immersion, with options from four weeks to a full year abroad. Local activities such as restaurant outings, cooking experiences, Languages Day and foreign film festivals supplement language learning.
