QAHS opened in 2008 as part of the Queensland Academies network of highly capable schools. It is the only QAHS campus located in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, Asia-Pacific's emerging Health and Innovation Hub. QAHS provides a world-class, technology-rich learning environment with an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. QAHS is an Independent Public School within the Queensland state education system. The campus operates in partnership with Griffith University to provide unique opportunities and enrichment activities for students.
QAHS participates in National Science Week with student-led STEM activities and partnerships with universities and industry. QAHS celebrates student achievements at events such as the Academy Awards and the Student Excellence Awards. QAHS engages with the Gold Coast community through Giving Day volunteering with the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation. QAHS hosts and showcases musical and other cultural performances, such as Music Showcase events.
School Councils enable greater involvement of the school community and other stakeholders, such as industry, in setting the strategic direction for the school. The functions of a school council include monitoring the school's strategic direction, approving plans and policies of a strategic nature, and advising the school's principal about strategic matters. The 2024 QAHS School Council includes parent representatives Mr Michael Raikes and Mrs Alison Wheeler, staff representatives Ms Benita Sihvola and Mrs Joanne Parks, student representatives Mr Pravit Tandon and Ms Yanyan Zhang, invited member Dr Kathy Mackey, and Principal Mrs Vanessa Rebgetz. Each elected parent, staff and student and invited member holds office for a term not longer than two years.
Queensland Academy for Health Sciences (QAHS) is a selective state high school on the Gold Coast, part of the Queensland Academies. The school offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) for students and runs a Year 10 curriculum to prepare for IB DP in Year 11, helping students explore subject choices and real-world applications. The Diploma comprises six subject groups and a core; students may take an extra Group 3 humanities or Group 4 science subject and can score up to 45 points, with up to 3 extra points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, and at least 24 to earn the Diploma. QAHS is an Independent Public School and partners with Griffith University for enrichment. The campus features state-of-the-art facilities: fully wireless classrooms, university-standard science laboratories, a 470-seat lecture theatre, a modern library, flexible learning spaces, and dedicated wellbeing areas, plus a gym and multi-purpose court.
