Ravenswood School for Girls was established on 28 January 1901 by Mabel Fidler as a non-sectarian private day school for girls, with the first classes held in a schoolroom on the block adjacent to Fidler's home, Ravenswood, in Henry Street, Gordon, and the school remains on this site. In 1925 Fidler retired and the school was purchased by the Methodist Ladies' College, Burwood, becoming Ravenswood Methodist Ladies' College. It became a day and boarding school in 1935 with the enrolment of the first two boarders. In the 1960s the school introduced its anthem Kindle the Flame and added a fourth House, York. The Ravenswood Parents' Association was established in 1991 to support the school and wider community.
Ravenswood's long community heritage is reflected in milestone events and initiatives. Love Ravo Day was introduced to celebrate Ravenswood's 120 years of education in 2021. In 2023 the school published Kindle the Flame, a history of Ravenswood produced with The History Smiths to commemorate the milestone. In 2024 the Knox Grammar School Cadet Unit was renamed the Knox Ravenswood Army Cadet Unit, reflecting ongoing collaboration within the Ravenswood community. The school acknowledges the Darramuragal and Guringai people as the traditional owners of the land on which Ravenswood stands.
The Ravenswood Parents' Association (RPA) is an invaluable support to the School community. Since its foundation as the Ravenswood Ladies' Committee in 1925, it has organised many of the School's major social and community events throughout the year, including the RPA Chantry Golf Day, RPA Trivia Night, RPA Christmas Lunch and RPA Class events. Funds raised from these events contribute to initiatives such as the audiovisual upgrade and stage refresh in the Lorraine Smith Auditorium, the Junior School climbing frame and the interactive ‘Magic Planet', among other projects. The RPA also raises funds and collects items for charities and provides care to families in need. Current parents are automatically members, and the RPA Executive P–6 and 7–12 Committees are elected annually; involvement through committees or volunteering helps model giving back and strengthens Ravenswood's community spirit.
