Sophia Mundi's curriculum is holistic, meaningful and human-centred. It merges Rudolf Steiner's principles of meaningful learning with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Senior Secondary. The curriculum is rich in arts, sciences, humanities and outdoor education and is tailored to resonate with every developmental stage so students thrive. A Sophia Mundi graduate finishes secondary studies with an inquisitive mind, an open demeanour and the confidence to contribute meaningfully throughout the 21st century.
The Arts are central to Sophia Mundi's approach. The school sits inside the largest Arts Precinct in Australia, enabling collaboration with artists in residence and with the Cone 11 pottery studio. Primary art activities link to Main Lessons and include watercolour painting, wax modelling, singing, dancing and class plays. In the Secondary, students take specialist Visual Arts, Drama and Music, with a diverse curriculum that spans drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, digital media and more.
French is taught as a second language throughout the school. The program begins in Prep with language through songs and games, and weekly lessons run from Prep to Class 6; French in Primary uses the AIM (Accelerated Integrative Method) based on gesture and choral speaking. The exchange program in Year 10 allows students to study at sister schools in France or Switzerland, and Spanish is offered as a second language option in Years 10–12.
Drama is an integral part of the arts curriculum; from puppet plays in Prep to solo performances in Secondary, Sophia Mundi regularly stages class plays and school performances. All students from Class 3 to 10 receive individual instrumental lessons and participate in weekly ensemble rehearsals, with solo performances and orchestral experiences. In Secondary, students also engage in specialist Visual Arts, Drama and Music classes with professional artists and performers, fostering collaborative creativity across year levels.
Seasonal Festivals & Celebrations are a cornerstone of community life, harmonising with nature's rhythms and providing meaningful celebrations for students, teachers and families. Autumn Festival features stories and music; Winter Festival is a fire festival with lantern walks and middle-school performances; Spring Festival includes dancing and garland making; Summer Festival includes class markets and performances. First Nations traditions and diverse cultural celebrations enrich classroom life and strengthen community belonging.
The wellbeing framework includes a Life Skills program in the secondary school, with weekly sessions addressing topics such as resilience, gender and sexuality, rights and respectful relationships, and drug education, plus guest speakers. A Careers Counsellor supports senior secondary students with career pathways and tertiary entrance. The IB Diploma Programme and the holistic curriculum foster independent thinking, personal initiative and global citizenship, preparing students for leadership and professional life.
Sophia Mundi values inclusivity and diversity, with active student involvement and a strong sense of community spirit supported by daily teaching and wellbeing programs. The Wellbeing Officer and Class Guardians provide pastoral support, and the Life Skills program, including topics such as resilience and respectful relationships, is complemented by guest speakers and organisations. The Careers Counsellor aids with career pathways and tertiary entrance, contributing to students' mental health and overall wellbeing.
Sophia Mundi Steiner School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational Steiner school in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of Steiner Education Australia and an IB World School. It blends Rudolf Steiner's Waldorf curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Years 11–12, while Prep to Year 10 follow Steiner principles through story, art, music, nature science and practical activity to awaken imagination and develop the whole person. The school operates inside the St Mary's building at the Abbotsford Convent arts precinct, a heritage site adjacent to the Birrarung (Yarra River) and near Collingwood Children's Farm. In 2012, the Mercator Annex added science laboratories to support the curriculum; the Arts Precinct provides spaces for Visual Arts, Drama and Music, with artist‑in‑residence collaborations and a nearby Cone 11 pottery studio. Outdoor Education, major field trips, and an exchange program in Year 10 with France or Switzerland round out a community‑focused, place‑based approach today.
