Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Established in 1985 by dedicated parents seeking a Steiner education, Sophia Mundi is a welcoming community of around 200 students. The St Mary's building dates back to 1911 and was renovated in 2006 to house Classes 1–6, with the Mercator Annex adding science laboratories in 2012. The school sits at the Abbotsford Convent site beside the Birrarung and near Collingwood Children's Farm, blending heritage, nature and urban life. The Wurundjeri people are the Traditional Owners of the land, and sovereignty is acknowledged and respected.

Community

Our community is an integral part of Sophia Mundi, built on the deep connections among students, parents and staff. The school feels like a family, with a culture that is supportive, welcoming, inclusive and collaborative. New and existing families are encouraged to participate in various ways, including volunteering in classrooms, helping with working bees, attending festivals, joining our Parents & Friends Group, or serving on the School Fair Committee. Joining the Parents & Friends Group and contributing to events fosters belonging and supports the school.

Parent-Teacher Association

Parents & Friends Group provides a pathway for families to participate in school life. Members volunteer in classrooms when asked, participate in working bees, attend festivals, and contribute to the School Fair Committee. To join, email SMSSpandf@gmail.com. Participation nourishes the school and strengthens the community. There are multiple opportunities to contribute across events and activities. All families' contributions are gratefully appreciated.

Sophia Mundi Steiner School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational Steiner school in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of Steiner Education Australia and an IB World School. It blends Rudolf Steiner's Waldorf curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Years 11–12, while Prep to Year 10 follow Steiner principles through story, art, music, nature science and practical activity to awaken imagination and develop the whole person. The school operates inside the St Mary's building at the Abbotsford Convent arts precinct, a heritage site adjacent to the Birrarung (Yarra River) and near Collingwood Children's Farm. In 2012, the Mercator Annex added science laboratories to support the curriculum; the Arts Precinct provides spaces for Visual Arts, Drama and Music, with artist‑in‑residence collaborations and a nearby Cone 11 pottery studio. Outdoor Education, major field trips, and an exchange program in Year 10 with France or Switzerland round out a community‑focused, place‑based approach today.
