Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school fosters inclusivity and a positive, kind, and tolerant culture. Active student involvement and a sense of community spirit are fundamental aspects of the educational approach. These values are supported in day-to-day teaching and through wellbeing and inclusion programs. In the Primary School, the class teacher coordinates wellbeing with three-year cycles, and a Wellbeing Officer provides direct support to individual students when needed. In the Secondary School, a Class Guardian maintains the relationship with the class and parents in three-year cycles (Year 7-9, Year 10-12). The Life Skills program in the secondary school offers weekly sessions on topics including Gender and Sexuality, Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships, and Drug Education, with guest speakers and organisations involved. The Wellbeing Officer and Guardian work 1:1 or in small groups to support mental health and wellbeing, and a Careers Counsellor assists with career pathways and tertiary entrance.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school embraces inclusive practices and equity, values diversity, and supports learning differences and disability within its inclusive ethos.

Mental Wellbeing

Wellbeing and mental health are central to student support. The Wellbeing Officer and Class Guardian provide direct 1:1 or small-group support for students' mental health and wellbeing. The Life Skills program in the secondary school addresses resilience, relationships, and wellbeing, with weekly sessions and guest speakers. Careers counselling supports senior students with post-school pathways and tertiary entrance.

Safeguarding

Sophia Mundi has a Child Safe Program. The school is committed to a safe environment with zero tolerance for child abuse and harm and to maintaining child safety compliance. Policies and procedures are designed in line with Ministerial Order 1359 and the Victorian Child Safe Standards, including a Child Safe Policy, Child Safe Code of Conduct, Child Protection Procedures, Reporting Obligations & Response Procedures, and a Complaints & Grievances Policy.

Sophia Mundi Steiner School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational Steiner school in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of Steiner Education Australia and an IB World School. It blends Rudolf Steiner's Waldorf curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Years 11–12, while Prep to Year 10 follow Steiner principles through story, art, music, nature science and practical activity to awaken imagination and develop the whole person. The school operates inside the St Mary's building at the Abbotsford Convent arts precinct, a heritage site adjacent to the Birrarung (Yarra River) and near Collingwood Children's Farm. In 2012, the Mercator Annex added science laboratories to support the curriculum; the Arts Precinct provides spaces for Visual Arts, Drama and Music, with artist‑in‑residence collaborations and a nearby Cone 11 pottery studio. Outdoor Education, major field trips, and an exchange program in Year 10 with France or Switzerland round out a community‑focused, place‑based approach today.
