It's best to ask — circumstances can change at any time.
The School opened on 14 July 1885 in the St Andrew's Schoolroom in Pitt Street, founded by Bishop Alfred Barry. It was created to educate choristers in the English choir school tradition and is the only school of its kind in Australia. In 1972 the Sydney Diocese commissioned a new school and office building on land behind St Andrew's Cathedral. The school began admitting girls in 1999 and became fully coeducational from Kindergarten to Year 12 in 2008. The school is located in two high‑rise buildings in Sydney's CBD, adjacent to Town Hall Train Station.
The St Andrew's Cathedral School and Gawura School communities form a warm, inclusive and vibrant network of current and former parents, teaching and non teaching staff, current students and Old Andreans. Our parents are welcomed and supported by the Association of Parents and Friends, our students (Andreans) graduate and become our Old Andreans, and the parents of graduates become our Hessians. The Association of Parents and Friends is an energetic group of parents and guardians who are committed to building a strong school community and to raising ancillary funds to support our school and students. The P&F holds community (friend-raising) and fundraising events throughout the year such as Welcome in the Square early in the year and the Christmas Rooftop Markets, that helps bring the year to a festive finale. Through the P&F, Parent Convenors form informal groups within specific year groups to provide opportunities for our parents to meet and get to know each other. Our alumni are represented by the Old Andreans Association which works actively to build connections between the School and our former students. The OAA manages its own Facebook and web page and regularly holds reunions and events for alumni. The School Foundation was formed to assist in securing the financial future of the School. It actively supports fundraising for Gawura School scholarships, the St Andrew's Cathedral School Building Fund, and the Heath Bursary Fund. It works closely with the P&F, the OAA, and GPAC (Gawura School Parent Group). In whatever way you decide to become involved at St Andrew's Cathedral School, we are looking forward to you becoming part of our community.
