Wenona's history began in 1886 when Edith Hooke opened Woodstock, offering languages, science and sport, and embodying service through its motto Ut Prosim. Woodstock admitted day students and boarders and flourished, outgrowing several premises; in 1913 Miss Hooke reopened Woodstock as Wenona, a primary school for day girls. In 1920, former Head Girl Miss Edith Ralston purchased the School, and in 1921 relocated it to 176 Walker Street, the site it sits on today. For close to 140 years Wenona has been led by visionary female leaders who recognised the value of women's education; current Principal Ms Linda Douglas arrived in 2025 and continues the tradition of educating young students to become Renaissance women.
Wenona's community is characterized by warmth and camaraderie, with a week of activities and events that bring together its diverse community. The Alumnae Association hosts Women of Spirit Breakfast, featuring keynote speakers and supporting the Barbara Jackson Scholarship. The breakfast celebrates women's achievement and resilience, and proceeds support the Barbara Jackson Scholarship. The Wenona Parents' Association organises initiatives such as a welcome morning for Asian parents to connect and overcome language barriers, with staff in attendance and new connections formed.
The Wenona Parents' Association (WPA) strengthens the partnership between the School and parents; parents become WPA members when their daughter starts at Wenona, and all are encouraged to participate. The WPA and Year Representatives organise events throughout the year to bring together year groups and the whole school, including picnics, family walks and parent dinners. The WPA runs two biennial events—the Gala Party and Spring Fair—events not to be missed. The WPA Executive includes a President, Senior and Junior School Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, Boarding Representative and General Committee Members. Wenona c.a.r.e.s is an initiative of the WPA to support current families during unexpected difficulties, and inquiries can be emailed to wpa@wenona.nsw.edu.au.
