Ibn Khuldoon National School (IKNS) opened in 1983 as a private, non-profit, co-educational institution offering bilingual education. It began with two kindergarten and four primary classes and expanded by adding new classes each year, with the intermediate level completed by 1988. IKNS was authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 1990, and the first IB graduates appeared in 1992. The school received full accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 1994 and helped establish the Middle East IB Association (MEIBA) in 1994–95.
