Introduction

International School Ghent (ISG) is a private, non-profit international school serving ages 2 to 16. The curriculum combines IPC in the Primary years and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in the ISG+ Secondary, with Diploma Programme planned. Pre-Primary is split into Lower and Upper Pre-Primary (2.5–4 and 4–5.5 years), using IPC-based topics to develop language, numeracy, craft, and expressive arts. In Primary, learners explore cross-curricular IPC themes with specialist Dutch, sport, swimming, and music teachers, plus a learning support programme; there is no English-language entry test, and students with limited English receive targeted support. In Secondary, ISG+ began in 2023 with MYP Years 2–4 (Years 7–9), progressing to full MYP in 2026 (Year 10, MYP Year 5). The campus is next to Ghent University and shares facilities in a Secondary building. A sports hall, music and language rooms, an auditorium, and outdoor space support a program, with Ghent University laboratories.

Academics

International School Ghent teaches IPC (International Primary Curriculum), IB (MYP) for students aged 2 to 16.

Curriculum

Pre-Primary is divided into Lower Pre-Primary (2.5-4 years) and Upper Pre-Primary (4-5.5 years). In Pre-Primary, integrated topics from the IPC form the foundation of language, numeracy, craft, and expressive arts. In Primary, the curriculum centres on the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) through cross-curricular themes, with specialist teachers in Dutch, sport, swimming, and music, and a learning support programme. There is no English language test to start at ISG; learners with little English receive extra learning support. In Secondary, ISG+ follows the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP); we currently offer MYP Years 2 to 4 (Years 7-9), with a full MYP to begin in 2026 (Year 10/MYP Year 5), and DP is planned for the near future; ISG+ is a candidate IB World School. The secondary program includes facilities with collaboration with the University of Ghent for biology and chemistry labs, and field trips, workshops, and values are integrated into learning.

Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school focuses on well-being and social-emotional development. A safe, inclusive environment helps every child feel safe, valued, and heard. Small class sizes enable teachers to know each student and support social-emotional growth. The school aims to help students build confidence, resilience, and positive relationships.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school provides personalised support through a specialized learning support teacher who offers targeted pull-out sessions for students needing extra help. Class assistants provide additional support within the classroom. Teachers plan differentiated learning tasks to accommodate different levels of English and individual learning needs.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school provides English-language education. For children learning English, a smaller class environment offers opportunities to practice speaking and develop language skills in a supportive setting. Teachers differentiate tasks to accommodate different levels of English and individual learning needs.

Mental Wellbeing

The school prioritises mental wellbeing as part of its overall well-being focus. A safe and supportive environment helps students feel valued and heard, contributing to their confidence and emotional health. Well-being is integrated into daily life and learning to support each child's holistic development.

Safeguarding

The school has a Child Protection Policy that details safeguarding responsibilities. ISG recognises that physical and mental health are essential to students' development and safety, and the policy outlines safeguarding measures to protect students at all times.
