The language of instruction is English, and EARJ is an IB World Continuum School offering the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It is an independent, non-profit English-language day school. EARJ awards the IB Diploma, the US Diploma (accredited by Cognia), and the Brazilian Diploma. IB Diploma Programme courses include English A Language and Literature HL/SL/HS, Portuguese A Language and Literature HL/SL/HS, French B HL/SL/HS, Spanish B HL/SL/HS, Spanish ab initio SL/HS, Portuguese HL/SL, Economics HL/SL/HS, Global Politics HL/SL/HS, History HL/SL/HS, Chemistry HL/SL/HS, Physics HL/SL/HS, Biology HL/SL/HS, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL/SL/HS, Mathematics Applications and Interpretations SL/HS, Visual Arts HL/SL/HS, and Theory of Knowledge.
EARJ offers After School Activities (ASA) in categories including Sports, Art & Performance, STEM & Creativity, and Enrichment. Activities run one hour after school and are taught by EARJ faculty and external specialists. The ASA catalog includes guitar, band, drama, jazz, ballet, art, crafts, cooking, and robotics among other options. EARJ also hosts a broad Clubs program with offerings such as robotics, finance, mathematics, reading, movies, digital arts, and honor societies.

EARJ offers more than 20 Upper School clubs and activities. Clubs include service clubs, honor societies, and interest clubs. After-school activities include social and creative options as part of the ASA program, with meetings during study hall, lunch, or after school. RioMUN is among the academic clubs and competitions available to students.
As part of graduation, all students participate in service-learning clubs and opportunities designed to make a difference in the community. EARJ promotes intercultural understanding and civic engagement through its IB programmes and co-curricular activities. The school is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by a School Leadership Team.
High School students may assume leadership roles (board positions) within clubs. EARJ has a School Leadership Team and a Board of Directors that guide the school's direction. Participation in activities like RioMUN and other academic teams develops leadership, teamwork, and professional skills.
EARJ operates athletic programs with multiple teams (basketball, cheerleading, futsal, running, soccer, softball, volleyball) and student athletes compete in city, state, and national leagues. Physical education is a graduation credit, and the After School Activities program includes racket sports and other physical development activities to support wellbeing. The ASA program also provides life-long learning experiences in sports, arts, and wellness.
Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro (EARJ) is an independent, non‑profit, English‑medium day school with two Rio de Janeiro campuses, Gávea and Barra. Founded in 1937, it serves ages 3–18 as an IB World Continuum School offering the IB Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme, and it awards the American High School Diploma and Brazilian Ensino Médio Diploma upon completing the full DP. The Diploma Programme includes Group 1 and Group 2 languages (English, Portuguese, French, Spanish) along with core components Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. EARJ also offers a Brazilian Accredited Program and university counseling. The school is recognized by the U.S. Department of State under the Assisted Schools program. Facilities include Gávea's MuseOn, a recently renovated auditorium, libraries and dedicated science and arts spaces, plus Barra's MakerSpace, high‑tech libraries, science labs, gym, field and outdoor courts. A broad co‑curricular program features RioMUN and a range of ASA activities delivered in English within an inquiry‑ and project‑based learning environment.
