Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Founded in 1964 as Escola Maternal Pequeno Príncipe (Little Prince Nursery School). In 1969, it was renamed Lourenço Castanho School and gradually incorporated all stages of basic education. The school pursues a holistic education centered on autonomy, critical thinking, and social dimension. In 2019, Atmo acquired Lourenço Castanho School, and in 2021 the Alto da Boa Vista unit opened; in 2022 a JK Unit followed, expanding to 11,000 square meters with eight floors and facilities inspired by the Centre Georges Pompidou.

Community

Culture and community have always been central to Lourenço Castanho. The Cultural Department was created in 1997 to lead cultural projects, and Music Festivals began in 1972. The school has long engaged families through social initiatives, with APEN (Aprendendo e Ensinando) founded in 1998, OPS (Organization of Caring Parents) in 2003, and APLOC (Parents' Association) in 2010. The school also runs Field Studies and has participated in the Young Parliament Program of the Legislative Assembly.

Parent-Teacher Association

APEN (Aprendendo e Ensinando - Learning and Teaching) was founded in 1998 to bring together students, parents, and teachers for social projects. OPS (Organização de Pais Solidários - Organization of Caring Parents) was created in 2003 to expand social initiatives and support students. APLOC (Associação de Pais da Escola Lourenço Castanho - Parents' Association) was established in 2010 to coordinate parent volunteers and school activities. These groups organize and participate in social initiatives, field studies, and community events, involving ex-students and alumni in school life. The school's social programs have included involvement in the Young Parliament Program of the Legislative Assembly.

Alongside IB, English is the curricular language from early childhood through high school; Spanish is taught 6th–9th grade, and German is offered with the Goethe Institute from 6th year to the first Ensino Médio year, including afternoon classes, cultural activities, library access, and Studienkolleg pathways. The school treats art as a language through LC Cultura & Artes and supports sport via LC Esporte. Its spaces are redesigned for transdisciplinary, project-based learning, with nutrition education through Sanutrin. After-school offerings include Programa de Aprofundamento Acadêmico for vestibular prep. In 2022 a JK Unit expanded facilities to 11,000 m², with Pompidou-inspired design.
