Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The St. John's Academic Centre began its activities in Brazil in 1997 as an academic research and reference centre for excellence in the teaching of foreign languages. It assisted bilingual and international schools to plan activities, train staff, develop academic material, adapt curricula, and guide pedagogical assessment in all learning areas. In 2002, the St. John's Language School opened, focusing on language acquisition for student travel exchanges and preparing for ESOL Cambridge and other international certificates, while continuing to offer consulting to international, bilingual and regular schools. In 2008, in Oxford, the United Kingdom, St. John's worked on creating and developing a cohesive international education system to adapt and integrate both British and Brazilian educational cores, including preparation for Cambridge exams, and since then the International English Learning System – IELS – has been used in partner schools. In 2010, the St. John's Publisher was created to produce, develop and sell its own academic material related to IELS. In 2017, St. John's International School was established as an international school operating according to Brazilian and British education cores to teach the Primary Years Programme in English, Portuguese and Spanish to children aged 18 months to 15 years.

Community

At St. John's, learning is driven by inquiry. As part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, the inquiry-based approach places students at the center of their learning journey, encouraging them to ask questions, investigate real-world issues, and construct meaningful understanding. Field trips are organized twice a year to extend learning beyond the classroom. Celebrations of learning are essential, with events such as Read Across Americas, Art & Music Festival, International Day, June Festival and Science Fair that give students the opportunity to share their discoveries, showcase their talents, and reflect on learning with peers, teachers and families.

Parent-Teacher Association

Families may participate in multiple opportunities to engage with the school, students and faculty. The academic calendar provides events such as International Night and Open House, as well as group projects exhibits and students' academic production. The most important is that parents show interest in the daily progress of their children, nurturing their efforts and showing appreciation for their improvement.
