Parent Experience

History

Calvin Christian School began in the late 1950s when Dutch immigrants from the Christian Reformed Churches in Winnipeg formed The Greater Winnipeg Society of Christian Education to establish a Christian school. It opened in September 1960 with 65 students in a seven‑room building. In the following years it expanded with portable classrooms; in 1989 an east wing with eight classrooms, a new library, multipurpose room, administrative area and gymnasium was added, followed by a renovation of the old building in 1990. A north wing with a computer lab was added in 1997 to accommodate growth. To establish a high school program, Calvin Christian Collegiate opened in Transcona in 2002 as the second campus, and a brand‑new gymnasium was built there in 2015.

Calvin Christian School is an independent Christian school serving Kindergarten through Grade 12. It has two campuses, Elementary and Collegiate. Balance Between Academics and Extracurricular Activities requires students to maintain good attendance and meet outcomes in order to participate in school‑related extracurricular activities. Teachers will notify students when progress and/or attendance is poor or slipping; students may be removed from extracurricular activities until sufficient progress and achievement is made. Extracurricular activities include field trips, mission trips, school concerts, community service activities, and other activities deemed by the principal to be part of the educational program.

The film festival showcases top student videos. ICT and other technology courses build digital skills. 110 hours of service equals one senior year of credit.

Arts & Creative

The Band program expands to Jazz and related trips. Grade 7 Band forms the Level 1 ensemble. Grade 7 Choir performs in community concerts.

Grade 7 French is offered. Grade 11/12 French Trip to Quebec provides immersion. French travel experiences broaden cross-cultural learning.

Language Provision

French is taught as part of the Manitoba Education Curriculum. Grades 1-3 include introductory French 3-4 times per cycle; Grades 4-6 receive French instruction 5 times per cycle as part of the required program.

Bilingual Teaching

Admissions

Admissions

Step 1 – Complete the Application: To register your child, complete and submit the Membership Application and Family Application as well as the corresponding Student Registration form(s). Registration forms are found under Admissions on the CCS site. The name of your current church and pastor are required. There is a $100 non-refundable application fee to apply to CCS. Payment can be made via cheque, cash or e-transfer to ccsoffice@calvinchristian.mb.ca.
Step 2 – Submit All Required Materials: Copy of the student's birth certificate; copy of the most recent report card; custody documents (if applicable); Sending School Questionnaire (for Kindergarten student applications) – to be completed and submitted by the preschool or daycare center in February.
Step 3 – Pastor Reference: All new family applications require a Pastor Reference. The school will send a Pastor Reference request form to the pastor of the church indicated on the Membership Application.
Step 4 – Review: After a full application is received, it will be reviewed to confirm all required information is included. If items are missing, you may receive reminders to help complete your application. The review ensures the file is complete before moving to the next steps.
Step 5 – Education Assessment: For families applying for a new school year, the school may request an educational assessment with the Student Services Coordinator to understand the student's academic needs. For mid-year transfer applications for Kindergarten through Grade 6, a brief educational assessment may be required; for Grade 7-12, the most current report card is required, and a brief educational assessment may also be required.
Step 6 – Interview: All new family applications require an interview with the Principal and one board member. The admissions interview will be conducted with the parents or guardians of the prospective student; students entering Grades 7-12 may be asked to participate. Interviews for new Kindergarten families usually begin in February; for Grade 1-6, March and April; for Grade 7-12, April and May.
Step 7 – Decision: Once a decision has been made regarding your family's application and student acceptance, you will be notified by email from the school office.
Step 8 – Enrollment: Upon receipt of your acceptance letter, a $400 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm enrollment. This deposit will be credited to the student's school fee account. A tuition form will need to be submitted for the upcoming school year (available in May for the upcoming school year). Calvin Christian School reviews each application with care. At any point in the process, CCS may determine that it is unable to continue with an application. This may happen if the school cannot offer placement or cannot move forward based on its admission policies and requirements. Family will receive written communication if this occurs.
