Founded in 1995 by a group of Franco-Ontarian parents with the support of the French government, Lycée Français de Toronto is the only French school in Toronto accredited by the French Ministry of National Education from preschool through Grade 12. It is a non-profit organization in Ontario. In its first year near the University of Toronto, the school enrolled 56 students. Additional classes opened in 1997, and in September 2002 the school opened its first kindergarten class. The first 23 graduates received the French Baccalaureate in June 2000. In September 2008, LFT relocated to its current premises on Dufferin Street, doubling capacity to 550 students. Each year the school moves closer to its maximum capacity.
The LFT serves a community of 520 students, 380 families and 100 staff from more than 30 nationalities. The community is described as supportive, respectful and caring, with the values of fraternity and togetherness at the heart of its identity and learning philosophy.
The Parents Association (APA) is the umbrella organization for LFT parents; by enrolling a child, a parent/guardian automatically becomes a member. The APA represents the parent community, acts as liaison with the school administration, coordinates parent representatives, and organizes events. Contact: apa@lft.ca. Volunteer involvement includes executive members, active members, and ad hoc volunteers. Parents can participate as class representatives or on the school council or board of directors. Annual events include a welcome barbecue, winter party, end-of-year party, coffee and croissants mornings, wine and cheese soirées, chocolate croissant sales, conferences, used-book sales, skate sales, and more. The APA also contributes financially to equipment for activities and school trips.
Lycée Français Toronto is a French international school in Toronto serving ages 2 to 18 and offering a bilingual curriculum from kindergarten onward. Core subjects are taught in French by native French teachers, with English taught daily by native English instructors. The school is accredited by the French Ministry of Education and AEFE and culminates in the French Baccalaureate. Students study a progressive multilingual program, with a second living language compulsory and a fourth language available from seconde; by graduation most students master three languages. A university admissions counselor supports post‑secondary planning. The school operates on three trimesters with up to 40 teaching hours weekly in the final years. Founded in 1995 by Franco‑Ontarian parents, it moved to its Dufferin Street campus in 2008, with capacity for about 550 students. The bilingual diploma and international recognition open doors to universities in Canada, the United States, France and beyond worldwide opportunities.
