Urban International School was founded in 2009 in downtown Toronto. It relocated to the midtown area in 2017 as its first expansion. In 2019 UIS opened a second campus in a suburban neighbourhood for high school ESL programs. In March 2020, UIS adapted to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023 UIS relocated to a larger facility to accommodate a bigger student body, and in 2024–25 expanded with two gym facilities, an auditorium theatre, and a lab facility; UIS plans to establish an international boarding school by 2030.
UIS has a Club System organized into Arts, STEM, and Sports streams, with a Student Council leading school-wide events. Arts Stream clubs include Visual Arts Club, Broadcasting/Media Club, and Drama Club; STEM Stream clubs include Coding Club, Bioengineering Club, Chemical Engineering Club, Math Competition Club, and Neuroscience/Psychology Club; Sports Stream clubs include Basketball Club, Badminton Club, Soccer Club, Swimming Club, Skating Club, and Volleyball Club. The Student Council is led by a Council Advisor and includes roles such as Treasurer, Event Coordinator, Student Ambassador, English Enforcer, and Alumni Coordinator.
Urban International School (UIS) is a private high school in Canada for students aged 12 to 18. It follows the Canadian Curriculum with Middle School (grades 7–8) and High School (grades 9–12). Middle School covers eight subject areas—Arts, Core French, Health and Physical Education, Language, Science & Technology, History, Geography—and a daily schedule of Language Arts, History/Geography, Math, Science & Technology, and French. High School offers courses in Arts, Business & Management, Canadian & World Studies, Computer & Technology, English, Mathematics, Social Sciences & Humanities, and Sciences, with electives such as Visual Design and Introduction to Computer Programming. UIS provides University Stream and College Stream pathways, guided by an Academic Tracking System and offering options in Engineering, Science & Math, Arts, and Business, plus arts, languages and drama electives. Students pursue the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD): 18 compulsory credits, 12 optional credits, 40 hours of community involvement, and the OSSLT/OSSLC literacy requirement. Scholarships totaling over $1.266 million were awarded in 2024–25, with 2025 offers to Canadian universities.
