Founded in 1887 by German settlers to provide values for their children, the Colegio Alemán de Temuco began in a room of a private house with a clay floor used as a chalkboard. Albert Kleinknecht was the founder and first director. A dedicated building was constructed in Temuco in 1917, and the current Colegio Alemán building at Hochstetter and Holandesa was inaugurated in 1954 as the school expanded to include high school by 1958. Today the school is a trilingual institution with about 975 students across Prekindergarten to high school, offering international experiences such as trips to the Llaima refuge, study tours to northern Chile, and a German exchange; in 2011 it began the IB Diploma Programme to foster international-mindedness and university readiness.
Our institutional mission affirms that the person is multidimensional and offers opportunities to develop all dimensions for every member of our community, especially students. We aim to strengthen coordination across the school to reduce barriers to learning and social participation. The 2024 focus includes forming a multidisciplinary service-oriented team, coordinating wellbeing actions for the entire community, and maintaining or improving wellbeing indicators. The wellbeing and convivencia team is led by a coordinator and by Bruno Valderrama, Maria de la Paz Costabal, Daniela Glaser, and Mabel Aravena, who oversee student affairs, socio-emotional support, and inclusion.
