German is taught as a core language with bilingual instruction under BILI; English is taught as a foreign language, and students may earn the First Certificate in English (FCE) in Segunda Medio. German language development is supported by Helen Fürniß (ZfA advisor for Primary in Chile), the LBI in Santiago, and Esther Weller of the Swiss School in Santiago. Students complete German language level exams (A1, B1, B2, C1); B1 enables access to German universities via Studienkolleg, and DSD II at C1 opens access to all German universities. The curriculum is international but aligned with Chile's Ministry of Education, and the school has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since 2009 for Segundo and Tercero Medio.
Since 2015, the Instituto Alemán de Osorno implements a bilingual teaching program (BILI) in German and other subjects. It is taught bilingually from 1st Basic to 4th Basic, with at least 50% of instructional hours in German. The classroom uses a one-teacher–one-language model, with German- and Spanish-speaking instructors alternating as the language of instruction. From Medio Menor to Kindergarten, children are introduced to this approach, and a bilingual initial-sound chart supports early literacy; the school plans to extend bilingual instruction into intermediate grades and to teach natural sciences in German and Spanish at higher levels.
German language immersion is delivered through the BILI program. From Medio Menor through Kindergarten, instruction begins in German and, by 1st through 4th Basic, roughly half of class time is in German. A one-teacher–one-language model is used in the classroom to support bilingual learning. A bilingual initial-sound chart and other literacy supports help students acquire German vocabulary and reading skills.
The Instituto Alemán de Osorno is a German international school offering the International Baccalaureate across all levels—PYP, MYP and DP. The IB continuum is aligned with Chile's Bases Curriculares, with German language as a central pillar and a bilingual pathway. Since 2016 the Primary level runs a bilingual classroom with more than half the lessons in German where possible. English is taught from the PAI and continues through the Diploma, with a target of at least B2 by graduation. The Diploma Programme includes a monograph and CAS, providing pathways to universities in Chile and abroad. The school runs an exchange program with Germany (Intercambio) and offers German-language pathways through the bilingual program (BILI). Facilities include a library and Centro Cultural Sofia Hott Schwalm, and Extraprogrammatic activities with transport to Pilauco for sports. The campus is at Los Carrera 818, Osorno.
