The Lyce9e Charles de Gaulle was founded in early 1944 by the Local Committee of Free France. This event is moving, recalling one of the most difficult moments in the history of France and the world. Its members helped liberate France by sending young volunteers, delivering parcels with clothing for resistance soldiers, and raising money through fairs, collections, and voluntary donations. They also wanted to leave in Chile something concrete and lasting that would demonstrate confidence in France's future. In March 1944, while France was occupied by Nazi troops, the school opened its doors at Colo Colo 131. Eighty-two children arrived on March 13, 1944 to meet a group of teachers from Martinique who arrived eagerly to bring this dream to life. The first principal was Monsieur Charles Mercent (1944-1946), who, together with a prominent Chilean collaborator, Mrs. Olga de Corsi, saw this idea take shape with active participation. Two people stood out for their drive and tenacity in creating the school: Mr. Jean Esquerre9, then French Consul, who led the fundraising campaign to raise funds and acquire the first building, and Mr. Jean Genestier, who propelled the establishment
as the First President of the Board of Directors. (Today, descendants of these founders sit on the Board of Directors of the French Educational Society of Concepcif3n.)
