Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Saint Gabriel's School was founded in 1931 with 10 students meeting in the founder's living room. A three-story institutional building was erected in 1945 on the founder's former home, and the school's anthem and insignia were established in 1948. In the 1950s, the Lilas Campus (1952) and the Bilbao Campus (1954) were created, with the Bilbao campus hosting the humanities program and Florence Michell serving as director; a Junior School opened on Diamelos Street in 1958. The school became a United World Colleges founding member in 1983, joined the International Baccalaureate in 1985, and began IB examinations in 1990, with the IB Diploma Programme expanding in 2011. In recent years, Saint Gabriel's has expanded its community and cultural initiatives, including hosting World School Volleyball Championships (2014 and 2023) and launching The Bridge: Community and Culture in 2024.

Community

The School Environment includes an extensive community and solidarity programme for all students from preschool to 12th grade, with participation on a voluntary basis. Students experience the values promoted by the school through active involvement in social intervention projects, interaction and support for children, adults, and the elderly with special needs, sponsoring children, and working in hospitals, schools, and communities. Parents are encouraged to participate in these activities to foster a shared institutional identity within the community.

Parent-Teacher Association

Parents and guardians are a fundamental pillar of students' learning. In 1959, a Parent Council was founded with bylaws and a Board of Directors. Meetings between the school's principals and parent representatives are held during the school day to coordinate the development of activities and address topics. Each year a calendar of activities related to curricular and/or socio-emotional goals is developed, including Night with Art, Sunset Fest, the SG Family Fest (kermesse), Shop My Closet, stadium kiosk management, and talks for parents. The Parent Council raises funds to help families facing financial difficulties and to organize other community events, serving as a fundamental ally in building community and a sense of belonging.

Saint Gabriel's School in Chile is a secular, co-educational, bilingual institution with two purpose-built campuses: Lilas Campus (PK–3) and Bilbao Campus (4th–12th). The school offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Senior School students and a Cambridge-accredited program with PET exams available on campus from eighth grade; younger students follow a bilingual English program beginning in Pre-Kinder, with intensive English at other levels. The four academic cycles—Junior, Lower, Middle, and Senior—support student development through critical thinking, collaboration, and metacognition. Facilities include a near four-hectare stadium in Las Condes for physical education and major events, with both campuses hosting athletics and tournaments. Extracurriculars emphasize service, literacy, and culture, including The Bridge: Community and Culture and a robust reading program. Saint Gabriel's champions community involvement, UWC founding heritage, and a tradition of sport and student leadership across its campuses. The school welcomes families seeking a globally aware bilingual education with diverse opportunities.
