Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Wessex School Concepción originated in Concepción as a bilingual school created to address the shortage of bilingual options in the city. The founder is Mr. Terrence Martin M.B.E., who established the school with a community of educators. The first enrollment occurred on October 22, 1989, and the PEI notes the school's founding years extend to 1990, reflecting a long-standing, community‑driven ethos with a humanist academic spirit. The Project Educativo Institucional presents four founding pillars—Aprender a ser, Aprender a conocer, Aprender a convivir, and Aprender a Transferir—and emphasizes holistic development across intellectual, social, physical, affective, aesthetic, ethical and transcendent dimensions. The motto of the school is Formamos ciudadanos capaces y felices.

Community

Our community engages in a broad program of activities and events. The Anniversary Picnic celebrated the day the school received its first enrollment, with parents, guardians and staff gathering to commemorate the school's origins and milestone; the event underscored the active role of families in school life. The school's educational project emphasizes clubs, assemblies, elective programs, remedial support, and study trips as part of daily life, enriching student experiences (including international study travels). A Scouts group, Scouts Wessex, was reintroduced in 2025, reflecting ongoing family and student engagement in extracurricular life.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Centro General de Padres y Apoderados (PTA) coordinates with The Wessex School to support school life and family involvement. The PTA is led by a president, Editta Ramelli. In 2025, the PTA delivered institutional neckties to Senior 6 during a Breakfast with the Rector event, highlighting ongoing collaboration between families and the school leadership. The PTA participates in ceremonies and family activities and contributes to community events such as the Anniversary Picnic, fostering strong connections between families, students and staff. The school website also notes active PTA involvement in coordinating and supporting a range of activities across campuses.
