NBHIS originated as the international department of Huamao Foreign Language School and was established as Ningbo Huamao International School in 2015 after licensing by the Ningbo education authorities. It became an International Baccalaureate World School in April 2012, and is the Zhejiang Province's only IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme to ages 2–11 and the Diploma Programme to ages 16–18. In 2015 NBHIS adopted its current name and joined the Round Square Conference of Schools, aligning with a holistic education built around IDEALS. The school is actively pursuing further accreditation, including the Middle Years Programme, and remains the only three-programme IB school in Zhejiang Province.
NBHIS hosts an international community with staff and students from more than 30 countries, and English and Chinese are used across programmes, with language policies supporting first language maintenance and second language development. CCAs are offered in English and Chinese covering arts, sports, leadership and service, and are designed to extend learning beyond the classroom. Service is central to NBHIS's identity; students participate in local Ningbo service projects and global collaborations as part of the IB mission. Round Square activities and online collaborations connect NBHIS to a global network; events include UN Day fashion shows and climate-change projects, and parent briefings accompany RS activities to inform families.
NBHIS does not publish a formal Parent Teacher Association on its site; parent involvement is supported through a range of programs and events. Parents participate in events such as Parent Workshops (for example, a staff-led Academic Honesty session) and Open Days, including Early Years Open Day. The school provides parent-facing information sessions and university/career guidance events, including College Entrance programmes and university representative visits. Round Square-related parent briefings inform families about the RS program and its benefits. NBHIS also shares a variety of family-inclusive events, such as Water Fun Day and other school activities to engage families in community life.
Ningbo Huamao International School (NBHIS) is an IB World School offering Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). The school was IB-accredited in 2012 and became NBHIS in 2015 after a new education license; it also hosts a North American Programme (NAP) for ages 15–18 and a Sino-Canadian Programme for pathways to Canadian universities. The campus is located on No. 2 Yinxian Avenue in Yinzhou District, Ningbo, and includes facilities such as an art gallery and a science museum. English is the medium of instruction; Mandarin/Chinese is taught as a subject. NBHIS is a Round Square member (since 2015) and emphasizes global citizenship through Round Square initiatives and diverse co-curricular activities. Weekly boarding is available for international and Chinese students. NBHIS provides college counselling and international university pathways.
